Analyzes the use of different kinds of energy and their environmental and social impacts, in both the developed and developing countries. The cost of energy is low, but the cost to our health, the environment and future generations is high. The cost to the environment is the most difficult to put into financial terms, but it will prove to be the biggest cost if we do not take action now. The authors urge realistic pricing policies, abolition of subsidies for fossil fuels, development of renewable energy and energy conservation.

Case studies show that the introduction of coal to replace wood as fuel in rural households in Zimbabwe and Botswana has proven difficult.
