PROFESSIONAL PUBLICATIONS... OF GENERAL INTEREST: GLOBAL LAND-USE CHANGE
following two articles are among seven constituting a special
section in BioScience, 44(5), May 1994, based on a
symposium at the 1992 Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society
of America. The others deal with deforestation and modeling
of land-use change.
Guide to Publishers
- "The Global Impact of Land-Use Change," D.S.
Ojima (Natural Resour. Ecol. Lab., Colorado State. Univ.,
Ft. Collins CO 80523), K.A. Galvin, B.L. Turner II,
300-304. Discusses the key issues relative to rapid
changes in land use and land cover that affect the global
environment, and argues for studies that would integrate
the social and natural sciences.
- "The Worldwide Extent of Land-Use Change," R.A.
Houghton (Woods Hole Res. Ctr., Woods Hole MA 02543),
305-313. In the last few centuries, and particularly the
last several decades, effects of land-use change have
become global. Developed countries bear some
responsibility for environmental deterioration in
developing nations. A new definition of development that
includes sustainable use of resources is needed.
