A Guide to Information on Greenhouse Gases and Ozone Depletion
Published July 1988 through June 1999

Item #d94jun176

"Build-Up of Carbon Dioxide Slows Down," N. Parks, Earth, 20-22, May 1994.

Data from Hawaii's Mauna Loa Observatory indicate that CO2 levels began to stabilize in mid-1991 although emissions continued to increase. Speculates about the sink for "missing" carbon.

Item #d94jun177

"Insects That Carry a Global Warning," S. Young, New Scientist, 32-35, Apr. 30, 1994.

Insects used as sensitive indicators of global warming show that signs of warming are already evident on the Arctic island of Spitsbergen. Whether this reflects long-term climate change or a broad natural cycle is not clear.

Item #d94jun178

"Drilling for a Past Climate," H. Beltrami, D. Chapman, ibid., 36-40, Apr. 23, 1994.

Explains how boreholes provide an historical temperature record. Data suggest that at least part of the past century's warming can be explained by natural fluctuations in the Earth's temperature.
