Describes a new approach that assigns each day in the observed and model-produced records to one of three classes defined by the upper-level steering flow for air masses. Application using a lake evaporative model shows a 19% reduction in the evaporative power of air flowing over Lake Superior, based on a GCM scenario.

"Use of General Circulation Model Output in the Creation of Climate Change Scenarios for Impact Analysis," A. Robock (Dept. Meteor., Univ. Maryland, College Park MD 20741), R.P. Turco et al., 293-335. This first in the series of PAN-EARTH articles combines general circulation model output with knowledge of regional climate to predict the response to CO2 doubling. Applies the technique to China, Sub-Saharan Africa and Venezuela.

Uses a linear regression approach to study this relationship for 126 stations in the U.S. for 1950-1986. Considers the implications of using extrapolations of past data for estimates of future conditions.
